How Much Should You Really Pay for a Dog or Cat Dental in Brisbane?

Updated: 6 hours ago

Most pet owners don't ask "what's included in this quote" — they just ask "how much." That's understandable, but it's also why dental pricing across Brisbane, West End, Paddington and Highgate Hill can look so inconsistent from one clinic to the next, even when the actual procedure being performed is the same.

At South Brisbane Vet, a standard dog dental scale and polish starts from $540, and a cat dental from $490. Both prices include the anaesthetic, monitoring, IV fluids and X-rays that some clinics quote separately — which is often the real reason a "cheaper" headline number ends up costing more by the time the final invoice arrives.

The question worth asking before you book anywhere

Dr Nic Cher, the principal vet behind South Brisbane Vet, recently put together a detailed look at how Brisbane clinics price dental work — and found at least six genuinely different pricing models in use across the industry, from flat per-grade fees to per-tooth charges to points-based systems. Read 2026 Brisbane Dog and Cat Dental Pricing Guide on DrNicVet.com.au and Real Cost of Pet Dental Pricing Guide 2026 on DrNicVet.com.au if you want the complete breakdown.

The short version: a low quote that excludes X-rays, bloods and the anaesthetic monitoring fee isn't actually a low quote once those get added back in. The only way to genuinely compare two clinics is to ask what's covered in the number before you compare the number itself.

What a fair dental quote in Brisbane should cover

  • A pre-anaesthetic check, so we know your pet is fit for the procedure

  • General anaesthetic and nurse-monitored vitals throughout

  • IV fluids, which support blood pressure and give emergency access if needed

  • A full scale and polish, both above and below the gumline

  • Dental X-rays — given up to 60% of a tooth sits below the gumline, this is the only way to know what's actually going on

  • Pain relief to go home with

Extractions, if needed, are the one part of the bill that genuinely can't be quoted in advance with certainty. We'll only know once your pet is under anaesthetic and we can see what the X-rays show — and we'll call you before doing anything beyond the standard clean. Our full dental pricing, including what's included as standard, is published on our dental pricing page.

Don't wait for a problem to find out

If your dog or cat hasn't had a dental check in the past year, our Free Nurse Dental Check is the easiest way to find out where things stand — at no cost, and not tied to any promotional period. Most pets in South Brisbane, particularly those over three years old, will show at least early signs of dental disease, and catching it at that stage is consistently the more affordable path compared with waiting for a Grade 3 or 4 procedure further down the track.
